Hujjat literally means evidence or that which proves an act or occurrence. In Ottoman law, it has two meanings; testimony, self-declaration or oath, and certification documents given by and registered at courts. These documents, which make up a significant portion of the Ottoman Shari'a Court records, can be compared to modern day notarized statements.
